    THE 30's
    By: Lauren Schneider
    When Babe Ruth was 7 his parents put him in St. Mary's Industrial School, or Baltimore, an institution for boys that don't have very many privileges. At St. Mary's, he practiced baseball on any spare time he had. In 1914 he was just then starting to play semi-pro baseball, in Pennsylvania. later that year he was sold as a pitcher to The Boston Red Sox. Ruth is left handed. from 1914- 1919, Ruth won 87 games and lost 44 games. The next year he was sold to the New York Yankees. In 1935 he was sold to the Boston Braves. Because Ruth was famous for being one of the best baseball players in world history, he went to hospitals and saw little boy and girls that had diseases and stuff, and warmed their hearts. In 1936, Ruth was put on the Hall of Fame in second place, Ty Cobb being the first. Before Ruth died he created the Babe Ruth Foundation to help his old school, St. Mary's Industrial school for boy. He also wrote a book called, HOW TO PLAY BASEBALL.

    Babe Ruth was more than a famous baseball player. He helped lift a nation during the Great Depression.
    Babe Ruth was born George Herman Ruth Jr. on February 6, 1895 in Baltimore Maryland. He was born to Kate Schamberger-Ruth and George Herman Sr.. Babe was one out of eight but only his sister Mary (nicknamed Mamie) and he survived. His parents were poor and worked many hours. Because his parents had very little time with him and his sister Babe became unruly, skipping school and causing trouble in the neighborhood. When Babe turned 7 his parents realized he needed to be at a stricter place so the decided to send him to St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys. While attending St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys he learned how to play baseball and he was good.
    The Great Depression started in 1929 after Babe Ruth had been playing professional baseball for many years. Even though many people lost everything (their jobs, their homes, etc.) baseball was not affected until 1931 when seat sales went down. When the people were watching Babe Ruth and the others play they were able to forget their worries even if it was for a little while. Of all the fans he met he loved the kids the most and it is said that he would play baseball with them.
    Babe was thought to be a charitable man. The country started to recover from the Great Depression about the time we entered World War II. Baby Ruth challenged Ty Cobb to a golf game where all the money went to war charities. He also generated money by volunteering for the Red Cross. Babe would even visit 4-5 Military hospitals a week.
    Now a days most people remember Babe Ruth because of all the baseball records he set. But those people that watched him play during the Great Depression saw more. They saw someone they could relate to, someone that was rough and touch but honest, unselfish, charitable and loved his fellowman. Babe Ruth died August 16, 1948.

    4th Period
    {black_tuesday_crash_begins.jpg}
    {BlackTuesday2.jpg}{Black_Tuesday.jpg}
    The great depression was 1929-1933. The roaring 20's (when most people were very stable financially) was like a match that lit the great depression's bomb. Black Tuesday was October 29, 1929, the stock market crashed that day and anyone who had unwisely borrowed money for large stocks were broke. Some people were able to get their money out of the banks before they closed. Others were not so lucky. The market lost 30 BILLION dollars in just two days! Suicides increased by 30 percent. And people stole from garbage cans and the like to get enough food to last them that day. There was another reason for the Great depression other than the stock market, unequal income. So, high payed people were mostly struck by the stock market but, low payed workers would buy things on credit. Causing them to get all loans taken away during the Black Tuesday leaving them with no money.
